For secondary applications such as hi-rise building rooftops, airports, and existing wind farms, the basic traffic-specific rotor assembly can still be used; this approach makes manufacturing of the basic unit more cost effective. In these applications, the TDWG unit is mounted on a rotating platter that employs a vane at the rear to keep it facing into the ambient wind. It also uses a slip ring, working over 360 degrees of arc, to transmit the power produced. To the maximum extent, these platter-based versions will also employ ducting, shrouding, and magnetic bearings.
